• Keep your eyes open. Be aware of your opponents' open cards to see if you have a winning or losing hand.
• If you see that your opponent has the cards that you need to improve your hand, it's time to fold and not waste anymore money.
• It is advisable to fold if another player's visible cards are strong. Just the same, you should fold if it's apparent that another player's exposed cards beat your entire hand.

How To Play 7 Card Stud Poker

7 Card Stud is the second most popular poker game. Many poker players consider this the most complicated form and requires a lot of skills and strategy to win because it is a complex variation of poker and mastering it could cost you a lot of time spent in cardrooms and your money.

Here's how 7 Card Stud is played:

Players place a small wager called “ante”.

• The players are dealt with three cards. Two face down (called hole cards) and another face up.
• The player with the lowest ranking up card must place the opening bet.
• Each player must fold, call or raise the bet.
• In the next betting round, the player with the highest hand will begin the betting.
• Each player is then dealt three cards face up. A betting round follows each card.
• The last card dealt to the remaining players will be face down. Then the final round of betting begins.

Remaining players will create the best five-hand card out of the seven cards dealt. Players then reveal their cards and the highest hand wins the pot.


7 Card Stud Hi-Lo/ 8 or Better

A popular variation of this game is the 7 Card Stud Hi/Lo Split.

• Betting starts when players place an ante on the table.
• They are then dealt two cards face down, and one card face up.
• The game proceeds just like the high-only game of 7 Card Stud except that the player with the highest up-card starts the betting.
• Players will form their best poker hand, which can be a high or a qualifying low hand.
• A qualifying low hand must have five cards of 8 or below, with no pair.
• Players will show their cards. The pot is split between the highest hand and the best low hand. If there is no low hand, the highest hand wins the whole pot.

5 Card Stud or Five Card Stud is another popular form of poker but it is seldom played in tournaments and more of a social game. The rules of this poker game is similar to 7 Card Stud. The main distinction being 5 Card Stud is played using five cards as aginst 7 Card Stud's seven cards.

Here's how 5 Card Stud poker is played:

• The players are dealt with two cards. One face down (called the “hole”) and another face up.
• The player with the lowest ranking up card must place the opening bet.
• From the left of the player making the opening bet, others begin to fold, call or raise his bet.
• From the third card onward, player with the highest hand begins the betting.
• Each player is then dealt with another three card face up followed by a new round of betting for each.
• This will continue until all players have five cards, one face down and four face up, or until only one player remains.

Remaining players now have five cards (one face down and 4 face up). Whoever has the highest five-card hand combination wins.
